Empty Stomach

rickster81's picture

i've often heard that taking certain supplements on an empty stomach is desirable. for example: probiotics and wheatgrass. can anyone offer an argument for or against this? conceptually makes sense to take these two items on an empty stomach, but it's very rare that my stomach is empty as i graze on food all day starting first thing in the AM with a shake and often ending last thing at night with a shake.

rick,

the benefit of taking wheatgrass juice on an empty stomach is so that it can be properly absorbed.

your stomach is empty first thing in the morning, and can become empty after 2 hours of not eating if you are eating small meals every 2 hours.

if you want to have a shake first thing in the morning, just delay the consumption of the shake by 30 minutes after you have your wheatgrass juice.

try having your probiotics before going to sleep, and plan to not eat for 2-4 hours before going to bed.

Indeed, for the same reasons that an empty stomach is not desirable when you take certain medications (you don't want to have them be absorbed too quickly into your system), you want to take certain items on an empty stomach (so that they can be absorbed quickly).
