foam roller
I just used a foam roller for the first time during stretching after class today. I had seen them at the gym but never used one before. The pressure from lying on them is another way to stretch your muscle.
The first stretch was to lie on my side and roll from your hip down to the knee. It was quite painful to put so much pressure on my muscle. It helped relieve some of the pain to let my feet touch the ground while rolling. I didnt like it, but supposedly the more you do it the more flexible your muscles become and its good in the long run.

my chiropractor loves these and recommended one for me. it is very painful at first. his demonstration of its use made it seem almost effortless. so i guess like everything, with some practice, it becomes easy.
The foam roller is great to use (under the guidance of a personal trainer or physical therapist) to help rehab injuries. When I was training for a marathon, I had a lot of strain on my IT band, and the foam roller stretches -- which I also found painful -- were helpful within a few days, and were less painful within a week. Yup, it hurts (why do it just to stretch or for fun?) but it's a great idea if you can't wait 3 weeks to get in to see a GP.
