Natural remedies for torn ligament

HealthWarrior's picture

I tore my knee lateral collateral ligament (LCL) a few days ago.   Doctor prescribed NSAID and rest.  I added the standard R.I.C.E as well.  However, I was a little bit worried because after 3 days my knee was still very swollen.  While doing some research, I was told to eat clarified butter (ghee) and massage the knee with sesame oil.  I found these to be very helpful.  After two days of eating 2 tbsp of ghee and massaging the knee with sesame oil, the swelling was almost completely gone and my knee is getting a lot better.

Does anyone have any other natural remedies to help the ligament heal faster?

It is going well.  It didn't heal as fast as I would have liked, but it is definitely getting better.  Ghee and sesame oil are very good.  They were specially effective during the first couple of weeks when there was acute swelling and inflammation.

I started taking supplements Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) which are thought to help cartelidge and connective tissues.  There are a few studies that somewhat support their efficacy.  I have noticed positive results from taking these, however it may only be placibo effect.  These are animal based products, including the shell of shellfish, so it is not suitable for vegetarians and those with allergies.

If anyone needs a vegetarian version of Glucosamin & MSM, NOW Foods makes one.   Here's a link to the description from the company's page.  http://www.nowfoods.com/index.php?action=itemdetail&item_id=11394

You can find this at Whole Foods.

Fungal source!  That is great.  I much prefer the vegetarian version to the shellfish version.  I will stop by WF to pick one up.  Thanks for the heads up.
