deodorants
My 11 yr. old uses deodorant regularly, and I just realized that what I have been buying her has been an antiperspirant/deodorant. These contain aluminum as an active ingredient which blocks the pores and prevents sweat from secreting.
This may be useful for a wedding, or special occasion when you don't want to sweat. But I didnt think it was good or necessary for my daughter to use on a daily basis. Sweating is after all good for you. (plus there is controversial info out there about a possible link of aluminum to alzheimers, not sure if that is accurate, but i'd rather play it safe with my kids)
I had previously tried the Tom's natural deodorant with her but was greatly disappointed, they didnt work very well. Now I am happy to report that I discovered one that works very well. It is by Jason, and its the Tea Tree Melaleuca Deodorant stick. It works very well, and definitely lasts her through the day!

Oprah hosted Sophie Uliano, author of Gorgeously Green, yesterday on her Earth Day show. Sophie spoke about safe beauty and hygiene products. She mentioned that the aluminum in antiperspirants is a neurotoxin, and recommended using Herbal Magic deodorant.

She also said phthalates are used in some body lotions, and being a hormone disrupter she recommended staying away from them. I just read the washington post article, The Plastics Revolution, posted on Myhealthgate (great article!) which also debates the safety of such chemicals.
Although I currently only buy lotions that are safe, I still have older products at home that I still use (lubriderm, neutrogena..) I think it is time that I threw those out and replenished with natural products.
Also, I never thought about what is in my lipstick. Considering you put that on your lips and usually end up eating a tiny bit....I better find out. I will look into it and let you guys know what I find out.
after discovering that anti-antiperspirants are unsafe because they contain aluminum a couple of years ago, i have tried several natural deodorants and have been pretty disappointed.
recently, i found a solution at whole foods that is basically a natural mineral salt stick (made of ammonium aluminium sulfate dodecahydrate, or ammonium alum). unlike aluminum based anti-antiperspirants that block your pores, or deodorants that try to mask the odor, ammonium alum works by inhibiting he growth of bacteria (which is what makes you stink). they allow for the elimination of perspiration because they do not block your pores. they are wonderful also because they don't smell like anything.
to apply, you wet this mineral salt stick and apply it to your under-arms.
the brand i picked up is called naturally fresh deodorant crystal available from TCCD.

I recently heard that aluminum in anti-perspirants might be really bad for your kidneys, so I will just stick to deodorants with no aluminum in them. You know it's a real shame that soo many products you buy are made with harmful additives and synthetic chemicals. However their is alot of natural alternatives out there, you just need to know where to find them.
