Post operative supplments
Posted April 24th, 2008 by bruce23
I just underwent an ACL reconstruction surgery. I have been doing some research on what supplements I should take and here are what I have so far. NOTE: THESE ARE NOT GOOD BEFORE THE OPERATION! They thin blood and impede the red blood cell aggregation which is not good before the surgery. I will be using these only during the post operative period. Any feedbacks?
- Vitamin C (info)
- Zinc (info)
- Bromelain (info)
- Chlorella (micro algae)
- Calcium (info)
- Magnesium (info)
- Omega 3 (info)
- Glucosamine (info)
I will also be using the dietary and mental strategies recommended at http://www.myhealthgate.com/discussion/732/post-operative-healing-strate...

i would recommend trying to get all these nutrients from fresh (living if possible) organic raw food that is uncooked vs. taking supplements.... if possible.
I mostly agree with that. However, it is hard to get all these from fresh sources at relatively high doses everyday. So for some I will use natural supplements rather than synthetic ones.
I am not sure about them having to be raw, too much raw food is not good for digestive system despite the relatively large followers of rawism. The arguement for raw food is in part driven by a desire to get the food enzymes, however, vast majority of scientists doubt the benefit of food enzymes in human digestion. This idea was built on the research that Dr. Edward Howell did in the 1920s and 1930s and subsequent books he wrote starting in 1940s.
Hey MyHealthGate guys, maybe you can do an article on this and review the latest literature?
Of course, there is NO QUESTION that organic vegetables, raw and cooked, are the most important factor for good health.
my trust in conventional western medicine wanes daily and is all but lost on almost all western corporations or industries out to make more money at the expense of our health and environment. and i'm only on chapter 4 of the china study!
mankind was eating raw for millions of years before cooking food with fire. animals in the wild eat raw and have far less disease than humans. take chimpanzees for example. read victoria boutenko's green for life for more on human vs. chimp diet. the more i read about raw and the more people i talk to, the more appealing it becomes. i have a raw veggie/fruit smoothie every weekday for the past two weeks and i can already start to feel a difference for the better.
natural supplements are a good start. if you have lots of swelling, take some arnica montana orally and topically, it will definitely help.
Oh yeah and prunes or prune juice to undo a side effect of the pain meds... :-)
hey bruce23,
systemic enzymes provide benefits beyond just helping with the digestive process. they also help with the healing post-operatively. they also help with the body absorb the vitamin and minerals, whether you are eating foods that provide those vitamins or minerals, or whether you are taking them in supplement form.
read this article about systemic enzymes and what they do.
