any tips on getting rid of fruit flies?
Yes, I am guilty of letting fruit sit and get very old in my kitchen fruit bowl. Then we got a lot of fruit flies and I am having a very difficult time getting rid of them. I threw out the old fruit and put the remaining fruit in the fridge, but they still seem to be surviving and multiplying. When the kids left empty bowls of yogurt out on the table, we found many fruit flies in them a few hours later. So it appears they like yogurt.
I am desperate now, and have reduced myself to chasing them down with a vacuum. Plus the family loves to eat fruit, and not everything tastes very good out of the fridge, take bananas for example.
any ideas on how to effectively get rid of fruit flies?

hi dominique,
this site provides some suggestions on how to handle a fruit fly problem. a variety of trap designs are suggested. sadly, these result in the demise of the fruit flies. but i am not sure if there is any other option.
they also provide several tips, for example, suggesting that you remove the source to which they are attracted. while putting the fruit in the refrigerator is not ideal, perhaps covering it and providing an alternate attraction (the trap) would work.
good luck - let us know what happens.
Thanks for the tips. I tried putting apple cider vinegar in the bottom of a cup covered with plastic wrap. I punched a hole in it and waited to see. The fruit flies did like the smell and ventured in. But easily went in and out through the small hole.
I had a little bit of balsamic vinegar left in the fridge, So I left that bottle out w/o the cover. This really seemed to work. At the end of the day there were about 8 flies in the bottle. Mostly just hanging out on the inside wall. ( a few were dead in the vinegar)
The problem seems to be getting better. I have also been taking care to wash the fruit as soon as I bring them into the home, and then put them in the fridge. Today I decided to try covering the fruit bowl with plastic wrap and leaving it out on the counter. My only concern was that maybe it would cause the fruit to go bad quickly.
