hey natashas,
i would question the myth about the need to consume at least 8 glasses of water. while we can consume other liquids, water is such a wonderful thing because it flushes our body of toxins, has no harmful effects (provided that it is not contaminated), hydrates us, and has no calories. indeed, anything in excess is not good, but consuming a good amount of water daily has no bad side effects.
as far as how much water to consume - 8 8 ounce glasses or more (or less), needs to be evaluated according to our lifestyles. if we are doing a lot of physical activity where we are sweating, we must have more water. but even otherwise, we can look to the color of our urine to determine if we are having enough water. if our urine is not colorless, we can definitely stand to have more water.
having more water also helps mitigate hunger. so many times, we think we are hungry, but indeed we are thirsty. having enough water decreases snacking throughout the day.
being that it is the season when we catch colds, drinking more fluids (more water) helps us to keep our immune system strong. this minimizes our chances of catching colds, and also helps us fight off colds faster when we do catch something.
