it may surprise some, but i did not go to the apple store this weekend to look at the iphone (or anything else).

one of my coworkers went friday evening to the apple store in tysons corner, va and purchased an iphone.

i had the opportunity to play with the iphone this morning, and i have to say that i am impressed. you can read the reviews and see the pictures online, but you have to handle one of these things to appreciate its beauty. the ui is responsive and well designed. the screen is just beautiful. the videos are smooth. the sound is reasonable. the online experience is slow. i didn't make a phone call, so i can't comment on that aspect of the iphone :).

am i getting one? no, not right now. maybe i'll look at rev b.

but go and play with one of these things if you have the opportunity. it really is revolutionary.

Mav,

I watched a video of the iPhone, it does look pretty amazing.  I personally won't buy one anytime soon even though I am amazed by the technology.  I wonder how many people really need or regularly use most of the features of the phone.   I think if you are not a hard core iPod user, this phone is a waste of money.

I heard after the first hour or so most Apple stores cleared the lines and still had inventory in hand.  Many people just walked in and purchased a unit with minimal wait.  That makes me think the consumers did not buy these as widely as Apple and analysts had expected.   Apple online store immediately had a 2-4 weeks shipping wait on units purchased online, I think that was a marketing move aimed to manage perceptions rather than an inventory issue.

Right now, consumers are buying these things on ebay at around 700-750 for the higher end model.  About half of what they were being sold for right after the sales began.

There has been a number of issues with ATT service and with iTunes activations for some of those who purchased these phones.  Although that is not too surprising given the difficulty of managing the process between two large companies and ATTs perpetual incompetence at customer service.
